The Yearbook of Music Psychology/Jahrbuch Musikpsychologie (JBDGM) takes good, transparent, reproducible, and open science very seriously. This means that all published papers will have undergone screening regarding the extent to which they have fulfilled the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines. The TOP Guidelines outline eight modular standards that can be implemented at three different levels (with Level 1 being the least, and Level 3 the most rigorous option). The JBDGM is committed to following Levels 1 and 2 of the TOP standards (see the summary table below).

Authors should also consult the Implementation Guidelines for Authors below for information on what they need to do to ensure that their submission meets these standards.

Transparency Standards

Modular Standard Implemented Level in the JBDGM Level 1 Level 2 Level 3
1 Citation Standards Article provides appropriate citation for data and materials used consistent with journal's author guidelines.
2 Data Transparency Article states whether data are available, and, if so, where to access them.
3 Analytical Methods (Code) Transparency Article states whether code is available, and, if so, where to access it.
4 Research Materials Transparency Article states whether materials are available, and, if so, where to access them.
5 Design and Analysis Transparency Journal requires adherence to design transparency standards for review and publication.
6 Pre-Registration of Studies Article states whether pre-registration of study exists, and, if so, allows journal access during peer review for verification.
7 Pre-Registration of Analysis Plans Article states whether pre-registration with analysis plan exists, and, if so, allows journal access during peer review for verification.
8 Replication Journal encourages submission of replication studies.

The guidelines summarized above apply to any paper published in the JBDGM that presents empirical data (whether quantitative or qualitative). Data, code, materials, and other documents should be safely and openly stored at the PsychArchives repository. Upon submission of a paper, authors should confirm that they have included appropriate statements (e.g., about the availability of data, code, materials, other documents, and preregistrations) within their papers, and all papers will be checked for their adherence to the journal's adopted TOP standards as outlined above. Authors should thus take great care to ensure that their papers meet those standards. Papers that do not meet the standards cannot be published in the JBDGM.

Implementation Guidelines for Authors

1 Citation Standards

To meet this standard at the level implemented by the JBDGM, the following is required:

  1. All openly available material (i.e., data sets, program code, and other materials) reused in a publication should be cited in the text and listed in the reference section.
  2. In-text citations and references should be formatted according to APA style (7th edition). Examples:

2./3./4. Data, Analytical Methods (Code), and Research Materials Transparency

To meet these standards at the level implemented by the JBDGM, the following is required:

  1. Authors must indicate in their submission whether the data, methods (code) used for analyses, and materials from the reported research are freely available.
  2. If data, code, or materials are freely available authors must specify where to access them.

5. Design and Analysis Transparency

To meet this standard at the level implemented by the JBDGM, the following is required:

  1. Authors need to specify the reporting guidelines used in their submission. The guidelines recognized by the journal are specified in the journal policies (see the JBDGM's Transparency and Reproducibility policy).

6./7. Study and Analysis Plan Preregistration

To meet this standard at the level implemented by the JBDGM, the following is required:

  1. Authors must indicate in their submission whether the study and/or analysis was publicly preregistered. Preregistration requires a public file archive that guarantees the preservation of a time-stamped, immutable version of the study protocol/analysis plan (embargos for public access may be applied). Just uploading a study protocol to an OSF Project (for example) will not be considered preregistration.
  2. If the study/analysis was preregistered, access URL(s) or DOI(s) should be added to the submission so that they can be used by editors and reviewers to access the preregistration.

8. Replication

To meet this standard at the level implemented by the JBDGM, the following is required:
  1. Replications of previous work are explicitly welcomed by the journal if identified as such. Therefore, authors should clearly indicate (in their cover letter, paper title, and abstract) if their submission is a replication study.
